Do not even think you can skip working a swatch BEFORE you start the pattern. No two stitchers are the same...in fact, your own stitchery can change from time to time. Under stress or the temperature is hot enough to drag on the yarn? You might be tighter. Very relaxed and fresh? You might be looser. In order to duplicate the pattern, you have to match the gauge! (hint: change your needle/hook size)
Do you know why patterns say "Sleeve, Make 2"? Because someone mentioned that their pattern only had one sleeve patt...
Ever think about writing the designer to ask if it is OK to make an item in a different color? Yup, someone has.
